Battle - where the course of English history was changed

Come visit the place where the historic Battle of Hastings was fought, the town of Battle. In 1066 William the Conqueror defeated Harold the Saxon king in the town, changing the course of English history. The town was constructed around the Abbey of St. Martin and now the ruins are a tourist attraction. The high altar is believed to have been put on the exact place where Harold fell. Another great attraction in Battle is the parish church of St. Mary, which was constructed in the 12th century. Now it houses a museum that features rare 14th century wall paintings, a Romanesque nave, a Norman font and the gilded alabaster tomb of Sir Anthony. In addition to this there are many other historical sites and museums in the town. The town's Almonry has been turned into the Battle Museum of Local History, which has on display the only battleaxe discovered from the Battle of Hastings site. Battle is truly a town rich in history and it is a great place to spend a holiday.
